What we learn from Geese

Yesterday morning I went for an early morning walk. As I did my usual perusal of the Caroline Street leftovers (lots of bars and restaurants in our neighborhood), I heard the unmistakable call of the geese. Ah, the pre-winter sounds…

This morning during my yoga practice I looked out and could see the reflection in a window across the street of a flock heading south, and then later a magical shift in the leader while I ate my lunch.

This reminds me once again of how geese are programmed to support and commit to leadership, to each other’s safety and to helping each other move forward on another years journey.

~ They flap their wings to create shelter and “uplift” for the other birds behind them.

~ They take turns at being the lead.

~ When the lead bird gets tired it rotates back and takes advantage of the power of the others.

~ They honk to encourage forward movement and speed, and they notice the drag and resistance when going it alone.

When a goose gets sick or wounded, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help protect it.  They stay with it until it is able to fly again.  Then they launch out together with another formation or catch up with the flock.

I saw a single goose flying north on my way to work today. Where was it going? Why north? Had it stayed behind to help another? Was it lost or confused?

I asked myself, where am I headed north or off course? Is my team, work or home, behind me? Am I behind my team in a way that supports them moving forward? Where am I playing it alone instead of feeling the “uplift” of those in front or behind me?

It’s easy to overlook the importance of community, teamwork and getting and giving support. In this holiday season there can be a great many expectations. Remember you don’t have to do it alone. It doesn’t have to look exactly as expected. If you go astray you can get back in line and be part of the whole.

Make a promise to look at things differently, to see the whole without attachment and forget about getting it right ~ all while being part of the one team on this planet!
